How to Celebrate the New Years at Home

If this New Year’s you don’t want to spend big bucks on a 5-star party or if you are not flying off on an exotic vacation, you don’t have to end the year on a sad note. You can, in fact stay indoors and have kick-ass New Year celebrations at home. In case you are running out of ideas, we are here to help, and this is how we think you can ring in 2012 at home in style.

1. Call over friends / family
The most important ingredient of a successful party is the guest list. Make sure you invite the right people – be it colleagues, friends, or members of the family. Invite those you know will get along with one another to avoid general social awkwardness. Your invites don’t have to be fancy, but they need to be respectful. So please call rather than text.

2. Food & drinks

Once the invites have been sent, it is time to decide the menu. Keep in mind the vegetarians & non-vegetarians and order food accordingly. Your menu should ideally consist of appetizers, entrees, main course and dessert. Stick to one cuisine – continental, Indian, south-east asian – rather than having a mix of all. As far as drinks are concerned, it is wise to stock up on as much as you can. After all, nothing gets the party going as free-flowing booze.

3. Music

This one is THE most essential component of any party. Update your iPod / pen-drive and ensure your music system / speakers are working fine. You wouldn’t want to be embarrassed by faulty systems that can potentially ruin your party and dampen spirits.

4. Just the two of you? Fret not!

It is quite possible that you want to have a quiet New Year’s. Spending the night in a quiet / calm way does not make you a loser, so you don’t have to feel embarrassed. Instead of pitying yourself, get out the whiskey and watch some amazing movies. Or sip some wine and groove to good old jazz. Enjoy the intimacy and hug your partner tight when the clock strikes midnight.

The essential thing about any form is celebrations’ is that you should have a great time. So do things your way and welcome 2012 with a smile.

10 great tips to become a Successful Public Speaker

“Personality Development” is one of the most commonly used psychological terminologies in modern urban India. 
Every Year I get invited by schools, colleges and different type of workplaces to deliver lectures on “personality Development”. Though there are thousands of aspects of Personality Development, one which is most commonly deficient in a great majority of people is “the art of Public Speaking”...
Among the lot of things I teach people on how to develop the art of Public Speaking,  there are 10 simple tips I ask them to carry home and think about.
1 . Nervousness – Even the most experienced of speakers feel nervous before going on stage. So take it in a positive stride. If you cannot handle the amount of nervousness, consult a good counsellor who will teach you instant anxiety relieving techniques.
2. Understand your material perfectly. You might not know every line by heart, but if you understand it 100% then you can mould any situation or question in your favour.
3. Create a friendly audience – Before starting your lecture/speech/presentation greet some of the people in the audience. Smile towards them. Relax yourself. If you get time, interact with them before hand and talk on issues non-relevant to the current topic of discussion.
4. Before starting,  Visualize yourself giving a very successful speech. During Visualization Concentrate on how you deliver the speech,  rather than the applause at the end.
5. Remember there always be a few people who will act funny during your speaking. They might be making faces, or talking on the phone, or sleeping... If something bothers you, stop your speech for a moment, point out there mistakes and then continue. This shows the confidence you have.
6. Attitude – Public speaking is all about attitude. If you want to succeed, your body will act accordingly. If you think you will fail, you body will act accordingly. Think Big and Positive
7. The main focus should be on delivering the core message of your speech/presentation/ lecture.
8. Practice – If standing before 100 people is difficult for you. Then start by giving speeches in front of 10. Graduate slowly to 100. If you fail once, don’t worry, try again and again. There is no harm in trying. And success only comes through trial and error.
9. Everyone has their unique style of public speaking. Don’t try to completely imitate someone else.
10. When you walk off the stage, no matter how good or bad you might have performed, don’t ever criticize yourself immediately. Always and I mean always, the 1st thing to do as you get down from the stage, is to congratulate and applaud yourself for having stood up there.

Every Karma is Counted.

The Holiday Season has started. The air is filled with laughter, celebrations, festivities and Happiness. Under the shadowed of these smiles and laughs is a section of the society, which lives an underground life. These are people who might be standing next to you in the local train, working with you in your office, living next to you but you will never come to know. These are people fighting the cancer of sadness and a trying to solve a mind full of negative riddles. 

You might never notice them, or even if you have noticed you might not be able to counsel them out of their misery because, mental health doesn't leave a physical hurt which can be treated. Emotional hurt is an invisible entity. If you aren't armed with professional knowledge about the same, it's just like fighting a ghost, its fighting the unknown.

It's my job to help such people get their life back. Today I got to meet one such particular individual who wanted me to share his story with all of you.
Mahesh (name changed) is a 35yr old businessman who has been suffering from severe depression and anxiety for the last one year. He has all reasons to be sad. Death has stuck his family with a vengeance. He has lost his elder brother, his maternal uncle and mother all within the span of 11 months. 

Thou initially he tried his best to cope with the situation, he just hasn't been able to come out of it. The last 3 months have been a living hell. His wife describes him as "living corpse". Though his family and friends are trying to put a brave face and counsel him, they are losing patience and extremely concerned when will he "recover". Very soon they will start falling apart.

His range of emotions has become restricted to spells of anger, sadness for most of the day, sudden flash of past memories in front of his eyes and unprovoked episodes of crying. Above all, he blames himself for all 3 deaths.

His brother died in a road accident in a different state, his maternal uncle was an alcoholic who suffered multiple organ failure, while his mother suffered a heart attack... When there is no connection within these 3 incidents, Even You would be wondering how can he be responsible for all 3 deaths?

3yrs ago Mahesh started a business in partnership with Vivek, his college friend. A simple idea, that required a lot of initial struggle to setup. Within a few months their efforts started to pay and they saw money landing within their hands. It was a win-win situation. Not only did their friendship blossom, but their families also came closer to each other. 

Ancient wisdom says that Money, Power and Sex are the most corrupting items god has placed on earth. In this case, this wisdom was proven right. By the end of the first year, business was so well, that the sparkle and shine of money started corrupting Mahesh's mind. He sought more control over the operations, and found mistakes in whatever Vivek did. With every month, there in-fighting grew. At the peak of their business, Vivek's father suffered a massive heart attack. Unable to take care of his duties, he let Mahesh handle the entire operation. For 3 months, Vivek spent every day at his fathers bed-side and tending to his family. Unfortunately his father could never recover, and passed away in his sleep. Two weeks after his fathers death, Vivek went back to work. He was surprised to find, that the entire system had been changed. He also found that Mahesh had taken over most of business rights, making him just an spectator. That day he and Mahesh had a major show-down. Mahesh, who had been waiting for this day, accused Vivek of using his father's illness as a pretext to avoid his responsibility. The fight ended with Vivek deciding to leave the company.

Just before leaving, pained by the betrayal, Vivek "cursed" Mahesh, that "one day he will experience the sadness of death, and will lose everything he had".  At that Mahesh rubbished it as stupidity and enjoyed the spills of his conquest. Mahesh's family got really upset by his behavior, and tried their level best to patch the partners. Unfortunately, things had gone beyond everyone's control. Mahesh's mother, took Vivek's "curse" really seriously, and felt her son had traumatized a good soul, so the entire family might had to pay. She constantly consulted Pandits, Gurus and astrologers regarding the same, and Mahesh just found it an amusing way of spending money.

The business did great after Mahesh  had complete control. He took it too new heights. His social status was always on the upscale. He became not only rich, but also powerful by the contacts he started developing. He  was over-confident about the control he had on his life.

Mahesh's first tryst with destiny came, when his youngest and most loved brother passed away. The 24yr old young chap, had gone to Himachal Pradesh for some work. While returning his car got hit by a speeding truck, resulting in instant death. Mahesh was inconsolable, it was if the sky had fallen. His whole world came crumpling down. His mother in a fit of anger blamed him for this happening. She reminded him of Vivek's curse.

The subsequent deaths of his Maternal Uncle and his mother within a few months span, stuck this thought deep inside his mind. He felt he was to blame for all the mis-fortune. He left his business to some inept managers and within months, was into loss. This further imprinted his mothers reminder into his mind. From that moment onwards he went into a severe depression, which he couldn't battle.

After having a very progressive counseling session and therapy chalking out session with him, I am very sure he will recover soon. But I still remember his last words as he left my consultancy room:
"Every Karma is counted...we should chose our actions wisely... I learnt it the hard way".

The Teenage Tensions – Parent View-point (part 1)

Every day I get frantic calls from parents of teenage girls. The moment they enter my consultancy room, the look on their faces tells much more than they would want to reveal. They all come trying to find the answer to the question “Why and How could their darling daughter, transform into this anger filled, foul-mouthed, disrespectful monster?”

Though there are at least 10 different issues which I could talk about, in a nutshell the 3 most prominent issues that give rise to extreme irritability, anger and fights between a teenage daughter and her parents are:

1.Decreasing School Grades – A new trend that is relatively seen especially in Mumbai city, is that girls perform wonderfully till 7th or 8th standard. But they have a slight to marked decrease in their school grades in 9th – 10th. Even a minor 5% decrease is extremely concerning for most parents. A 10-15% drop is devastatingly alarming for most.

2.Relationships – 15 is the new 18. The change in social structure, facilitated by the increased information inputs through internet, t.v. and radio... pushes many a girls to start fantasising and feeling the need to “Fall in Love” from as early as 12yrs of age. It’s increasingly common to see girls getting into “relationships” by 14-15. As most girls understand these to be actions that will not be appreciated by their parents, they tend to keep it a secret.  Unfortunately the lack of knowledge, the happiness of being loved and the social pressure from their friends are all responsible for the alarming increase in untoward consequences like teenage pregnancy, teenage rape or sexual abuse and teenage exploitation.

3.Clothes – with decreasing neck lines and decreasing short sizes, the current fashion sense of teenage girls is giving a lot of heart pain to many parents. Coming from a generation where skirts and shorts leaped till knee length if not more, and the dresses covered most of the body except probably arms... Accepting this new look and fashion is extremely difficult for most parents. It becomes even tougher, when they realise how young guys are looking with lustful eyes towards their daughters.  Naturally giving rise to major tensions at home.

Are you a qualified but unemployed?

Every Day I get to meet parents, spouses or individuals who are suffering from Clinical Depression due to Unemployment. The monster of unemployment is growing at an alarming rate in India. With postulated 40million unemployed youth, we are one of the youngest nations in the world and one with the highest unemployed population.

Are you unemployed? Are you among unemployable? Are you behind the race? If it is like so you have to know the techniques to be employed and to rise in the corporate ladder like many others.
India has the potential and so you! India is a world leader in service sector. From IT sector, to BPO (Business process outsourcing) and KPO’s (Knowledge process out sourcing) the world looks upon India for efficient workers.

The irony of these sectors is that they all face a typical problem. Despite the large number of educated youth, there is a shortage of skilled manpower.

A recent survey showed that the main reasons for not hiring an educated youth, normally fall into 3 categories:
1. Lack in Communication Skills  - 60% rejects fell into this bracket.
2. Deficiency in Analytical skill and problem solving -  25% rejects fell into this bracket.
3. Lack of knowledge about their own subject. – 15% fell into this bracket.

Employers are struggling hard to attract new talent. While the talent pool they have is demanding for huge pay-packages, creating a big gap between the freshers and old employees.
With the Global slowdown approaching, companies are only looking for a competitive edge to survive in the market.
It’s unfortunate that though India is becoming a global educational hub, the system is really deficient in fulfilling and teaching the basic above mentioned skills to eligible candidates.

Many big industries have set-up their own in house training program to fight with the problem.
Most of the newly employed youths have to compulsorily undergo training program to improve on their deficient traits. Unfortunately a learned and trained employee has higher chance of being poached by other institutions.

Food Habits that are destroying your Child’s physical and mental health!

Mumbai: Mumbai is fast becoming a city of overweight but undernourished children, who are fast falling prey to ailments rarely heard of in kids earlier. Experts lay the blame on traditional food losing out to fast food on kids popularity charts, a phenomenon abetted by busy parents who dish out instant meals.

Obesity is currently believed to be the worst epidemic among Indias children and 14% of all Mumbai’s schoolchildren are overweight or obese, according to a study done by Asian Heart Institutes doctors and published in the British Medical Journal.

Moreover, even overweight children suffer from the deficiency of essential micronutrients, which has proved to be a concurrent epidemic.

Research suggests these micronutrients are crucial to maintaining the body’s digestive and hormonal systems; deficiency of vitamins like D and B12 could act as triggers for diseases ranging from cancer, weak bone structure, anaemia, decreased memory and concentration to anger and depression.

There is no denying that Mumbais children are growing obese. Worse, about 60% of Mumbaikars suffer from deficiency of essential micronutrients. A study done earlier this year based on data collected by 198 nutritionists and dieticians from over 1,200 patients, including children, revealed that 81% of suffered from iron deficiency,15% from vitamin deficiency and 3% from zinc deficiency.

Doctors are most worried that urban children are forsaking are vitamin B12 and B3.The deficiency of these cause an array of problems from graying and loss of hair, skin troubles, aches and pain in muscles and weakness in bones, faulty sleep structure, faulty memory functioning, irritability, mood swings and even suicidal thoughts.

Gastroenterologist from KEM Hospital say problems like calcium deficiency set in very early among Mumbai kids, another fallout of their poor diet. As children opt for more of junk and less of fresh foods, there is over-nutrition macronutrients like carbohydrates and fats, alongwith under-nutrition of micronutrients like vitamins, minerals and fibres.
Junk food is high in salt,sugar and trans-fats. So children consuming these tend to be over-weight and obese and have chances of getting diabetes and heart problems earlier in life. But the deficiency of micronutrients makes them internally unhealthy.

Eating Better,Healthier
 Simple solutions suggested by doctors, nutritionist and MasterChef's:

1. Give children cereal with milk,but add crushed dates instead of sugar to sweeten it.

2. Give children bread preparations like sandwich, subs or toast only once a week, substituting white bread with brown or whole-wheat bread

3. Shallow fry cutlets instead of deep-frying them. Make the cutlets with less potatoes and more vegetables.
4. Include uttappam,idli or dosa in the childs menu at least once a week
5. Make tachos with cornflour instead of maida and bake them.
6. Steam dahi vadas and add freshly prepared chutneys. You can include spinach in the chutney, so that kids get the nutrition without knowing they are eating spinach

Marriage and Spirituality

There is something spiritual about marriage?

How else could it have remained the single most celebrated social exercise all across cultures and time. To think about it, from the swayamvar of Sita a few million years ago to last year's Prince Willam and Kate's royal wedding... Marriage has thrilled, emotionally touched and been a cornerstone event in the evolution of mankind.

The Prime question does marriage have any spiritual connect?
the answer is Yes.

Is marriage essential for our spiritual evolution?
the answer is Yes.

In a neo-materialistic world, were we have narrowed the importance of marriage to a legal permission to have sex, or a necessary exercise to gain social acceptability many have forgotten its importance in spiritual growth.

so the 4 most important ways in which Marriage actually aids towards Spiritual Awakening are by teaching:

1. Importance of Love - A marriage without love is like an apple without sweetness. No one likes to eat a bitter apple. Similarly spiritual awakening is not possible without love.
At its very first step, Marriage teaches the ability to create, harness and develop love for a completely unknown individual.

2. Importance of loyalty- Once you have learnt the ability to create love for someone, its extremely important to maintain that love. Marriage teaches the ability and capacity to channelize your love onto one individual.
No spiritual awakening is possible if you channelize your energies for just a few minutes or just a few hours.
It has to be constant, daily practice.

3. Importance of Trust and hope - Everyone sticks besides you in good times, but only your true companions stay during tough times.
Marriage teaches the importance of trust and hope in tough times.
only he/she who "Always" trusts and hopes of connecting with a superior being will attain spiritual awakening.

4. Importance of emotions over materialism - At the age of 60yr, when most people have attained all materialistic pleasure they could demand off, comes a time when one feels like retiring and enjoying the last phase of his/her life. This phase becomes more enjoyable when a true, trusted companion stays with you.

Spiritual awakening cannot be bought. You have to earn it. The only currency that matters is emotions and emotional dedication.

Marriage helps in spiritual awakening if one becomes aware of it.

How to Select a Gym?

A few days ago a very good friend of mine, suddenly got an awakening call from his annual medical check up. All his pathology reports showed some kind of deviation from the normal. His BMI, blood pressure, weight,  blood sugars and cholesterol levels were all next to breaking the boundaries of normalcy.

Needless to say, his first reaction was that of shock. Naturally like most non-medicos, the second reaction is to rationalize and find absurd explanations for the same. His belief, that this was just a “slight weight gain” induced by recurrent office stress, which would be rectified in the next set of tests. Unlucky for him, he had a friend like me, who showed him the true picture of his unhealthy body.

I soon realized that educating him on the concepts of “healthy living” was like dancing in front of a raging bull... He would just not listen to a single word of Wisdom given to him.

He naturally used his own logic and initially thought of battling the situation by going on a diet (a.k.a starving himself) and taking long morning walks. His endeavour lasted 5days. After which he started procrastinating on the same, and by the end of the 1st month he had gained another 3kgs.

Finally after the constant emotional push and pull of his wife, he decided to join a gym. To motivate him further, his wife decided to join along with him.

The next big roadblock was to find a gym apt for both. After their initial attempts failed, they asked me to join the search.
We all took a Saturday off, and went gym hunting. It was astonishing eye-opening  experience to see how irrelevantly people join Health Clubs and Gyms.

Selecting the perfect and right Gym or health club is as important as selecting the right doctor. One false move and you could be regretting with lifelong injuries.

Few observations I made analysing the “gym selecting” behaviour of my friends, the front-desk management of most gyms and facilities provided by most gyms are as following:

1.      Research - Most people just walk into the next door gym. Before you decide to go gym-hunting, first prepare a list of all the gyms that are within your reach. Make sure you not only add all those near you, but also add some gyms which are little far but still accessible to you.
Use the Internet or Just Dial or the Yellow Pages for references.

2.  Targets – Know your body. At least know your body weight, blood pressure. Also prepare mental targets of what body weight you want to achieve. For example, if you are 70kg.  A target of 60kgs within 4-6months time is very achievable.

3.    Don’t Hesitate – Many people hesitate entering into a gym. They feel it’s so big, so plush or vice-versa it’s so small, so cheap. Never judge a book by its cover.
Remember Gym’s are just like your local grocery store. They want patrons to come and buy their offers.
So while you go into a gym, remember you are the king/queen not them!!

4.   Money – annual subscription cost is a major determinant in the final decision making. So be sure that you search at least 5 different gyms, before committing to pay.

5.     Sales –Most front-desk gym managers are very pushy salesman. They will try to load you with extreme Bull Shit!!!.. They will talk in terms which go beyond your understanding. Upper Body, Lower Body, biceps, triceps, metabolisms... Believe you me, 90% time they have no idea what they are speaking.
In a few gyms that I visited with my friends, I didn’t introduce myself as a qualified health and wellness professional. So most of the managers tried to “hypnotize” me with their big and grand talk. Which was utterly baseless non-scientific idiocy. It's only when I told them who I am, that they got defensive and like a turtle who quickly hides into his nutshell, they kept their mouth shut from there on.
Remember, a gym is there to do business, so they will try to pressurise you to buy their membership. Never commit at once.

6.    The best time to join a gym is either the end of month or end of financial quarter. As most gyms have targets to meet. (yes! Gyms have target on how many new subscriptions they have to achieve within a month, quarter or year)

At this time they are on the back foot, if you pressurize them, they will give you better offers.

7.    Gimmicks – All gyms have major gimmicks. The gym-trainers who are taking you for a tour of the place, are programmed to talk in certain ways. At the first look they will understand which part of your body needs to be worked upon. So if you are fat at the tummy, they will emphasize on exercises for the tummy. They might also ask you to do a few of them, just to feel the “pressure” on the tummy.... All GIMICKS!!!

The BIGGEST Con is when they ask you to place your hands and feet on machines that will give away your fat percentage, your bone density, etc etc.
These machines are completely useless. They just make a good show. DONT FALL FOR THE SHOW.

8.    Trainers and Training Sessions – The back bone of any gym is the quality of trainers it has. The moment you visit a gym for membership, everyone is trying to sell your Personal Training, Massage, Sauna, Kick Boxing, Aerobics Packages... No one talks about the most important the Trainer.

Trainer – Make sure that a gym has govt. certified trainers. Ask the gym to show you the certificates of the same.
Do you want to trust your body into the hands of someone who has a scientific understands how body, muscles, bones functions or into the hand of someone who just believes working out means sweating it out till you drop dead.

In my private practice I see high number of cases of people who have suffered back, knee and hip injuries due to “extreme” workout plans devised by illiterate trainers.

Training Sessions - Ask them why do you need a Personal trainer. Ask them why do you need 2 massages a week package. Ask why you need 2 sauna sessions a week... will all these help you achieve the desired weight... Do a small internet search on the same... You will find how much these people lie to you.
Chose a training program you are comfortable with. You are motivated to do. It's your body, not theirs.!!!

9.    Walk Out – If your queries are not satisfied, just get up and get out of the door. Don’t feel of hurting anyones feelings. IF a place doesn’t instil confidence in you, just let it go and move to the next.
